Frequently Asked Questions

What materials do you use?

I work with a variety of materials and techniques. I enjoy exploring an eclectic range of media depending upon my interests at the time and what I feel works best with each project. However, I predominantly work with paintings and drawings. Sustainability and environmentally-conscious methods are central to my work and I'm always looking for sustainable alternatives.

The following are materials I use frequently:

Paintings: I work in acrylic paints, watercolours, coloured pencils and chalk pastels. I sometimes add detail with pen.

Drawings: I primarily use Sakura Pigma Micron fineliner pens, but i also enjoy drawing with biro. I enjoy producing detailed drawings using linework and dotwork. I often combine my drawings with paint.

Sketching and surfaces: I have many sketchbooks! I produce sketches in pencil, Sakura Pigma Micron Fineliners and Biro. I often add colour using watercolours, chalk pastels and sometimes acrylics. I use thick papers for sketches and projects, using a variety of hotpressed or coldpressed watercolour papers and acrylic cartridge papers. I also enjoy working with clay and natural objects as surfaces, such as shells, wood and feathers.

Clay: I use air drying clay and fimo to produce my clay creations. I often combine this with handpainting each piece. I am incredibly interested in ceramics and would love to work with clay more!

Natural Materials: Through sustainable foraging, I enjoy using seasonal, natural materials in my work whether for inspiration or to directly include in weaving, collage, printmaking and more.

Jewellery: I use Fimo to handmake beads to create jewellery, and I sometimes handpaint my jewellery too. I also enjoy working with wire.

clothing: I use acrylic paint combined with fabric medium to handpaint clothing, and iron the designs to fix them to the fabric. I obtain clothing from the most ethical sources i can, often second-hand stores.

Collage: I enjoy collecting materials that I feel have the potential to be reused, as opposed to being thrown away. I use these materials in my collages, primarily made from recycled magazines, newspapers, packaging and books. I also try to produce packaging for my work using recycled materials.

Digital: I rarely use digital methods within my work, but i use adobe photoshop to layer scanned in pieces i have created by hand.

What role does sustainability and environmental protection play in your work?

I am very passionate about sustainability and deepening our connections with nature. I try to weave this into my work both through themes in my creations and the materials I use. I repurpose second-hand clothing/shoes to create my handpainted clothing, to draw away from unethical fast-fashion. I also try to create my work with as little waste as possible, for example by using up leftover pieces of fimo instead of throwing it away. I have a collection of recycled materials - wrapping paper salvaged from present opening, magazines, newspapers, packaging from things ordered, treasures I've hoarded - the list goes on! I use all these materials to hand-make packaging for my creations. None of my packaging is new (except for art print packaging, but I am looking for alternatives) and is always reused/recyclable/recycled. I also love the idea that my packaging can be reused by you to wrap gifts/make collages etc!
